I think the idea of looking for paganism in Christian practices whether it be identifying things that seem to parallel pagan rituals like candles and incense or transubstantiation or the even more obvious co-option of pagan holy days and their relevant symbols and rituals ultimately misses the mark.

Of course you are going to find these things as Abrahamic monotheism developed out of a pre-Mosaic pagan Semitic worldview, and Christianity in Europe developed from its infancy in a pagan Mediterranean worldview and later adapted to convert northern European pagans.

But likewise, modern paganism developed (and continues to develop) in a monotheistic Christian society and much of it based on history and commentary that survived through the lens of historians and other sources that were entrenched in the Christian worldview.

Just as one could say 'Nuns are quasi-pagan', one could say 'Wiccans are quasi-Christian'.

The reconstructionist movement exists to directly address this very condition in contemporary paganism.

Catholicism is very much a mix of judaism and paganism, though many people have no clue about it. Pagan roots are more reminiscent in older countryside folks' practice, that is much more linked to nature. Nuns' devotion to mother Mary is another example of a very pagan concept.

I assume you would mean Catholics, and many atheists, would have no clue about it.
Christian Fundamentalists certainly do, it is virtually taught around the kitchen table and from day dot.
Not denying there are some elements that would be considered pagan by born agains/ evangelicals, but that does not mean we don't worship the same God.
Fundamentalists do not like Catholicism and liken it to paganism, I have read enough comments on their articles and forums to know that, but it is still Christianity with ancient ritualism and ties to the original church.
It is in fact, THE original Christian church.
Btw I have had relatives that spent whole or part of their lives as nuns or in the catholic clergy, so understand this devotion.
