Post News, Should 4-year-olds be wearing skinny jeans?

Mass retailers like Old Navy and Gap are selling skinny jeans for girls as young as four. Harmless trend — or an easy way to slip into an eating disorder?

I certainly wouldn't allow it. IMO, that's a style for teens/young adults.

When I was a little kid in the 80's my mom had me in stir-up pants....of course the stir-up part drove my crazy and I made her cut them off. If anything those are tighter. I think people need something to be worried and mad about in order to be happy.

I think it depends on how they are made, and what they are worn with. If the fabric is stretchy with an elastic waistband, and worn with a long shirt, I wouldn't mind. They need to be comfortable, not rigid. I have a friend with a 3 year old that wears leggings with long tops, and she looks cute in them. I don't really like how the child in the picture is wearing those jeans, though. The whole outfit just conforms to her shape a little tighter than what I'd dress my own daughter at that age in.

This. I wore stir up leggings too in the 80s, but they were always paired with long t-shirts (and a side ponytail, of course!)

As the mother of two girls, I can attest to how difficult it is to find the latest styles and keep my girls dressed in a way that is age-appropriate. The skinny jeans don't bother me if they're worn with a longer top (as long as skin doesn't show when the girls sit down). I stay away from any pants that have a lot of trim or words on the backside, though. My husband has very strong ideas about clothes that he feels encourage looking at little girls' bottoms. The jeans in the photo don't bother me. They're not tight or overly sexual at all. As far as promoting eating disorders, that's a far bigger problem than the latest style.

Second the leggings in the 80s! Except that I loved stirrup pants!

At four years old (and thereabouts), children don't know what fashion is, why it is, nor what their inside labels say, unless it is pointed out by their parent. By mid-elementary, most kids have been given a lesson (or several) on fashion by watching older kids.

As a parent, I buy clothes that fit my children. If that happened to be so-called skinny pants, I suppose I would have no objection. However, I luckily have boys.

We are way past the stage of jeans creating eating disorders.

As long as a number of different styles of jeans are offered, much ado about nothing, IMO. Still plenty of girls out there who are genetically prone to be thin children, and their parents are probably glad to be able to find clothes that actually fit their 'beanpole' for a change instead of having to belt something overly baggy onto them.
