Each generation has their own vibe sort of speak and not all adjust with the times some tend to stay or only like the genre of there youngin days. My mom Love her doo wop and oldies and I love my hard rock and roll

I LOVE Lady Gaga! I think her music and art style are amazing.

But, her 'Alejandro' music video, I admit that I might be cautious of letting my child watch it.......... lol.

It's such a pervasive part of our culture, and tweens are really starting to care about fitting in and what their peers think of them. It could stunt their social development to forbid them from listening to it. I don't want my kid to come across as some socially isolated weirdo.

As for the various states of undress, which I guess is the issue, as I don't think there's much wrong with their lyrics (well, other than Rihanna's "Rudeboy"), I'm pretty liberal when it comes to that. We've talked about how the entertainment industry is not real life. There are a lot worse things they could be listening to and watching than Beyonce, Rihanna, and Lady Gaga. Rap music with excessively violent and misogynistic lyrics is where I draw the line.

My kid mostly likes the music I listen to anyway.
I like this post. It's true. I loved music when I was a kid (in the 80s and 90s) and it didn't 'influence' me or give me bad ideas, etc. It's music. It's entertainment and (sometimes) art. It's a form of creative expression. It's not some manifesto.

I think the point here is to teach kids what to take seriously and what to enjoy for fun's sake. I mean, you would take them to a museum and let them read classic books, right?

I think people forget what its like to be teenagers.
I think they forget what the world was once like when everything didn't revolve around "serious business" 24/7.
What just having fun meant...

It seems like all adults think about is the deeper meaning of things and how it affects you...you forget not a lot of teenagers think that way.

I listen to songs for how they sound and if they are catchy, I don't know half the meanings to songs I know, nor do I care to find out. If I and my friends think that way at 18-20 when our parents no longer have control of us then we most certainly didn't think that way when we were 13-17 when our parents really could control what we listened to. I was going somewhere with all this but forgot what I was going towards I'll have to edit later when I remember.

Good point, txtqueen...my ex (in college) had a HUGE cd collection and listened to music all the time (didn't like computer or tv)...and it turned out she didn't even know the lyrics to most of the songs. She just liked the way they sounded.

Nickelback is one of those bands that just gets under my skin, as soon as they come on the radio, I change the station.
