9th baby in California dies from whooping cough - CNN.com

The most since 1955? Abominable!

It's important to note that all of the deaths were in infants under the age of 3 months. In California, children are given four (or five doses), beginning at two months of age. Even if the infants received their initial doses, they would not have had complete immunity. Please, please, people, get the vaccine!

The thing that irks me about Jenny McCarthy is she harps on about vaccines and does nothing to promote Fragile X awareness, which she actually knows about, and which is the leading known cause of autism. She should be out there urging women with possible family history to get tested and instead she's out marching against vaccines.

yes, but if the older kids were all getting vaccinated, they wouldn't have had it to pass on to the infants.

She has her foot so far into the ring against vaccinations that if she backs down now, she would lose all credibility. All of it. No one would pay any attention to her at all.

I should have been more clear, because that's the point I meant to make. These infants might have been (probably were) infected by older children who did not receive the vaccine. Even if the babies had received their first dose, they were still vulnerable. It's really important for everybody to be vaccinated against this easily prevented disease.

Adults likely need the DtaP booster. Or TdaP. Whichever it is called now. Or at least a titer, but boosters are faster and easier from a public health standpoint.

But the babies under 3 months wouldn't have caught wooping cough if the entire population was immunized for whooping cough.

I apparently was not clear. That's the point I was trying to make, but was unsuccessful.
