My question is if not Chinese, why Spanish, French or Latin?

The Chinese population is ever expanding and you know what? I'm Chinese and you think an asian couple is making fun of you while you're standing right next to them wondering if they are- they are! And now you'll now!

I'm currently researching a major American-owned venture capital firm for something I'm working on. First stop: Their website. Up in the corner the Chinese flag. Click on the flag and pages and pages of information. In Chinese. So I'm at a disadvantage to the researcher who knows English and Chinese. Knowing Chinese would be a leg-up I don't have.

I began learning Spanish in school when I was eight. When I lived in So Cal I used it every single day. (Nothing like knowing what other people are saying about you when they think you're clueless.)

And Chinese is a language she will be using all of her life. I'm actually quite excited for her!
Hehe. I love listening in when people think I can't understand them. My Spanish also came in handy when working retail. I was one of the ones who could understand the Spanish speaking customers. This store was in one of the select areas that doesn't have a lot, so there weren't too many employees who spoke the language.

I am also working on learning Chinese. It's a good language to learn right now. Even if China does fall into oblivion as some suggest, learning a language that different from your own really exercises your brain.

Good for you!

In your area a lot of stores look for Spanish/English bi-lingual employees. In the future it will be Chinese/English. In Orange County this is already being seen for a variety of businesses. And the Chinese/Korean/Cambodian shop keepers there are no dummies. I knew many an Asian shop owner in heavily Hispanic areas that spoke Spanish. I had a favorite do-nut shop where the owner spoke Cambodian, a tad of Vietnamese, English and Spanish because those speakers were his customers.

Making fun of me for what, exactly? I would think they would have more interesting things to discuss. But please enlighten me, anyway.

I'm not fluent in Spanish yet, but it won't take me too long to get there once I really start working on it again. One of the main reasons why I have to look in Orange County for a job is that almost every job out here requires either English/Spanish or English/Mandarin.

Well, then, that just begs the question - how do you know that the people standing next to you are making fun of you?

My Vietnamese daughters will be learing Chinese soon. Many Chinese in our community and I want to give my girls the opportunity to learn about their culture of origin. Nothing would please me more than "half babies" except it is my experience most Chinese think Vietnamese are inferior.
