I think it's best to let them decide for themselves when it comes to wearing coats.

I used to be the same way. I always had the "Oh mom, it's only about 30 feet from the door to the car" argument. She still made me wear one, of course.

They'll grow out of it. I think it's a mere rebellious thing that most kids do just for the heck of it.

LOL.....yep, I see it all the time too. In fact, I didn't bring it up before, but I was one of those kids who hated coats...with a PASSION! I didn't get cold like many other kids. In fact, if it was snowing outside, shorts didn't bother me at all. Fortunately, we don't live where we get too many days way below zero, but the fact is....a lot of kids aren't outside for very long. If they wear a large coat, it's too warm once they get inside and they have to keep track of it and keep it out of the way.....inconvenient baggage. LOL

For the older kids here, it's also a matter of what to do with a coat once you are at school. With 2-3 kids sharing a locker, there simply isn't room for coats - even if they were inclined to wear them. Most kids just wear hoodies - with shorts or jeans depending. Coats, hats, gloves or umbrellas? Not happening.

I can understand this. I don't like dealing with a coat once I'm inside the mall. I can see dealing with the cold for the walk to and from the car. The ones who walk to and from school or stand at the bus stop, IMO should be dressed warmer than they are.

Wow. I really learned something on this thread - I learned that coats are passe. I am dead serious. They are a pain in the butt. The kids are right! Hoodies are the way to go - portable, easy to manage, easy to stuff in a locker or backpack, no muss, no fuss. Kids are brilliant!

They are until the bus or car breaks down.
