I'm the Mother of 2 girls - about to turn 12 & 14 and the stepmother of 13 y/o twins.

Looking for books that offer advice on parenting teens. Anyone have one they like?

Amazon.com: How to Talk So Teens Will Listen and Listen So Teens Will Talk (9780060741266): Adele Faber, Elaine Mazlish: Books

Some of the role-playing cartoons are kind of hokey, but this does help parents to carefully decide theier words and reactions to typical teenage experiences. It's helped me quite a bit in staying calm, rational and understanding under pressure.

Not specifically parenting, but Davachka's post reminded me of this book, and it DID help me, loads, with parenting:

Radical Acceptance

And

Parent-Teen Breakthrough Wish this one was still in print! Lucky there's enough used copies around that I can still recommend it. It puts relationship-building first, a practice that has had incredible results with my own kids.

Positive Discipline for Teenagers: Resolving Conflict with your Teenage Son or Daughter by Jane Nelsen and Lynn Lott.

The How to Talk books are excellent and that one has already been mentioned.

I second this one (and agree about the cartoons.....) This book even helped me communicate with co-workers more effectively. It is based on respect - for yourself and for your children.

Good Luck!

Faber and Mazlish also have a book on communicating with teachers. It's called How To Talk So Kids Can Learn and it addresses the way teachers and parents communicate with each other as well as how to talk to the kids.

Also, if you want to read about how they became effective parents, read their first book
Liberated Parents, Liberated Children.

I read the kid version of this and it was excellent. One of the best parenting type books that I have found.
