I love hot sauce and drink tabasco... it wouldn't have worked on me. Apparently it's not working very well because the child is still misbehaving. The cold shower though... *brrr*

I saw this on the Joy Behar show ("Supernanny" was being interviewed) and had to turn in off when I heard the boy screaming in the cold shower. So sad

There is a parenting book by Lisa Whelchel from the Facts of Life that recommends this as one method of *creative correction.*

Lisa Whelchel: Official Site (http://www.lisawhelchel.com/ccreatbk.htm - broken link)

That's sick. Can't anyone discuss things with their kids? Reason with them?

Whelchel will never be arrested and jailed for child abuse as her book is considered a wonderful one for Christian parents. Yet, she is emotionally abusive.

On p. 138 of her book, for example, she say:

Quote:
"As we walk along together shopping, I will suddenly give them silly commands that they must obey without arguing, such as 'Walk backward,' or 'Stop and touch your toes,' or 'Give me a kiss.' Occasionally I'll throw in a real command, like 'Don't touch that,' or `No, you may not have an Icee.' My favorite curve, however, is to say no to some reasonable request, like 'May I go to the bathroom?'"

That screaming in the shower got to me too. She just adopted this little boy only 2 yrs ago. Who knows what he's been through and now she adds to it. Someone needs to put her in a cold shower w/ a bottle of hot sauce crammed down her throat. She had her 10 yr old daughter recording the incident. How twisted is that?

Saying no to wanting to go the bathroom? That sure sounds abusive to me.

I agree. And adopting older children with baggage may not be the same as raising you own. She ~may~ be a fit mother; but not for THAT child. A new home needs to be found. Sad.

I know that this is a popular discipline technique among fundamentalist Christian families but I do not know how it started.
