I have a 14 month old and she has been little Miss Sleepy lately. She is sleeping from 8:15pm to 9:00am, taking one 2.5-3 hour nap and then another 1 – 1.5 hour nap. This can be as much as 17 hours of sleep, but more typically is around 15.5. This is higher than the charts online say by two or three hours. She goes to sleep easily and without any rocking or soothing other than her pacifier.

When she is awake, she is a happy baby. She is clingy, but happy. She doesn’t talk but can pick a horse out of a line-up of farm animals if you ask and can build a wooden cone puzzle with a little guidance. She will say the sounds for maybe six animals. She points to what she wants and babbles almost always. She isn’t walking but gets around fine crawling and cruises along furniture (she has been doing this for a long time). She is a little lean, in about the 20th percentile of weight.

I figure everything is fine, but all the sleep makes me wonder. Any more experienced parents have advice?

How long is lately? Is it possible that she is getting sick, or going through a growth spurt? My kids always sleep a lot in those circumstances, maybe for a week or two at most.

lately is for the past three weeks maybe. she has been sick with flu/cold things and an ear infection three times in the past seven weeks, but now she seems okay.

she is small and eating a lot, so hopefully it is a growth spurt.

Eating a lot and sleeping a lot - sounds like a growth spurt!

I agree, growth spurt. Also, is she learning something new? Is walking new? Or she may be getting ready to talk more.

I wouldn't worry but you are right to keep a chart about her eating and sleeping habits and also any symptoms she may be showing. This age so many changes and things to learn. Her little brain needs time to process it all.

thanks for the posts, everyone. we always notice that she gets tired after visiting new people or going somewhere with lots of new thing. when we put her down for a nap after occasion we say she is "down for processing"

she does seem to be on the verge of more talking and walking for that matter. lately she is pushing around dining room chairs, using them as walkers.

in case you're wondering who the subject is:
