Hopes - I love that story. I'm going to borrow it - it's a great passive aggressive under cover insult. (not that I think your son meant it like that.)
Dew - I got a lovely mental picture of your mother from yours.

I know my son. It was definitely a DIRECT insult, not passive aggressive. He made it clear to her that he knew she was insulting him.
He said her eyes got huge and her mouth dropped open. Everyone in the kitchen burst out laughing.
She never blessed anyone's heart at the restaurant again. I guess she learned quickly that doesn't go over well in this region of the country.
What's hillarious is my son knew damn well that it was an insult, and I was clueless until I learned it from you guys here a month ago.

My son is more in tune socially than me!
Oh! In that case, it's even funnier. I thought he'd just said it because he thought she was being nice to him for blessing his young heart (if that makes sense). Your son's a friggin genius!
I couldn't control myself when he told me. I had to laugh. I guess it's okay now that he's 18, right? He was 16 when it happened. I only heard about it the other day.
oh, btw, his friend moved in a few hours ago. He unpacked his stuff. He's decorating his room right now.
My son is taking it....well enough. He's not buddy buddy but he's trying. I know he wants to be friends again. I know they both do. Guess it will take time.
Hope everything is OK there. Let us know how your house did.
