Honestly, I rarely bought specific "back to school" clothes. When I was growing up we had separate school clothes and play clothes. In early elem. school, - I couldn't even wear pants to school, let alone jeans. My kids pretty much wore the same clothing whether or not school was in session. I bought them new clothes when they needed them....or when I could anticipate them needing them and a big sale was coming up.

Same here. We tend to buy clothes as needed as my kids wear the same thing to school that they would wear anywhere else. Our pruchases tend to be based more on growth spurts and necessity then simply the time of the year. Since my wife is a sale/deal hawk she can be persuaded by a really good "Back to School Sale" if it is indeed a good sale to maybe buy some extra clothes.
When the kids were in elementary school, they usually got a new "first day of school" outfit. One outfit. They also usually got a pair of new tennis shoes to start the school year. School starts in Colorado in mid-August, when it's usually still quite warm outside. Mostly they wore shorts and other summer clothes for the first month, at least.
Usually in October or so. The kids usually pick out a new shirt or something for the first day of school but we don't buy "school" clothing until October when the weather starts to change and they need to wear pants vs shorts.
I am starting investing in a new store and wondering when most of you start buying, back to school clothes for your children?
Thanks
When my daughter was in private school (k-4 - 6th grade), I started shopping 2 mths ahead, being I was ordering uniforms online w/ school's logo. Back to school always included several shirts of school's colors, sweater & jacket, skorts/shorts and pants, (jumpers when she was little), along w/ new socks and a new backpack. She also got a new pair of casual shoes and tennis shoes.
Now that she's in high school, I still buy her new shirts of the school's color, jeans, shoes and a brand name bag for books.
I use to sell alot of her previously worn and still in good condition (some never worn) sweaters, skorts, shorts and pants on ebay. I would start listing them in mid to late summer and always sold everything I listed. I've always donated backpacks and shoes.
Besides a nice outfit or two for the first day of school/school pictures, we don't really do back to school shopping as the kids wear "everyday clothes" to school. Plus, I'm in Wisconsin and even here, it doesn't start getting cold (pants weather) until late September or early October. Being a "sale queen", I see no sense in buying a bunch of new things in the summer when there's a possibility the clothes could be outgrown by November. Instead, we supplement the wardrobes as needed, throughout the year.
the year before when they're on clearance. What is the climate like where you are? In CA I hated all the fall clothes in the stores in August when it would be 90 until October. Here it is a little different. You could conceivably wear fall clothes in September. I'd probably start looking in August.
