Something else: When he says he's nauseaus does he ever throw up? And, to go with the question of allergies, does he have any other symptoms? (Keeping a log was a great idea. An allergist would recommend that as well.)

Biggie: When he's doing something he loves does he stop and complain about these symptoms and put himself to bed?

I was thinking glasses, too. Does he need a new prescription if he already has them? Has he ever had his eyes checked by anyone other than the nurse at school or his doctor? Take him to a good eye doctor who's good with people his age.

I'm hearing impaired which messes with my equilibrium and there are times when I get headaches and nausea because I feel dizzy or I've had to strain to hear. Talking on the phone gives me a major headache because it is so hard for me to hear. (Our insurance doesn't cover hearing aids which would help me, and youngest son's braces/orthodontics is a higher priority at the moment...) When I am in loud places or there are a lot of noises I also sometimes get dizzy and feel a little nauseous and get headaches. There are just so many sounds and I have to struggle to decipher them and make out the ones I really want to hear. It can all sound like static sometimes. Maybe have his ears checked, too, by a good audiologist and ENT.

It's impossible to say with any certainty what's going on for a myriad of reasons. At his age, he may not be able to identify his own feelings and interpret them with much accuracy. So what an adult might clearly understand as anxiety may come across to him as a stomachache and nausea. Or a headache. Or, it may very well be something physical. I sympathize with the doctors too, because it's a hard call. When there's no obvious problem, a lot of vague symptoms and nothing conclusive to go off of (he doesn't actually vomit, but just complains of nausea), it's hard to know what to do. Should they give him a CT and expose him to all that radiation for vague complaints? Is drugging him going to do more harm with the side effects than good? Still, I agree with the others that getting another opinion and visiting specialists would be wise. Rule out that it's anything medical.

Missing twenty days of school is a lot, especially the older he gets. He'll start to fall behind. If he's not running a fever and doesn't actually throw up when he gets nauseated, you might schedule a meeting with the nurse and ask her to instead just give him some saltines and a bit of ginger ale (you provide) and send him back to class. Or for a headache, have her administer Tylenol if he's not running a fever. You might also consider whether his schedule is so stressful that he doesn't have enough downtime. It's impossible to say. I agree with the others that it might help to keep a log, try different things and see what has a positive result.

Hello everyone.

I have a 11 year old son and he has the same problems. Nauseous, vomits, headaches. His tonsils were taken out and still the same. Various doctors have saw him. Even 2 pediatricians whom said it was his imagination, although the both missed his sever swollen tonsils. He's had various tests and nothing conclusive. This strange illness has plagued him for 2 years now. Of course, over this time period, he's missed much school, but he enjoys school and his education. No psych issues to report on this area. A GI medical problem or is it a food allergy issue? Other thoughts?

Have you considered migraines? My daughter started getting them when she was 8, she has since learned her triggers but many doctors consider migraines to be an adults only condition even when children present with classic symptoms. My daughter would get headaches, vomiting, and light insensitivity.

My daughter had this issue. In her case, she was stressed due to too many activities. Stress can cause physical symptoms. Something to consider.
