Did anyone watch The X Factor? I meant to, but probably won't.

Anyone else have to have the capital punishment discussion with their younger kids? That was interesting. It was/is all over the news here, so it had to be done, but that's a really tricky one to explain.

No kids here to discuss it with, and my very conservative friends agree with the outcome. I was pretty horrified.

I did watch Modern Family. Love that show. Did not watch the X Factor. The kids didn't see the news yesterday or this morning, so no cap punishment discussion here.

I watched the X Factor. (I forgot about Modern Family. My brain is not wired for showtimes appropriately yet).

It was a bit weird. I liked the judges, and it's an interesting dynamic between LA Reid and Simon Cowell. LA Reid is well known in the industry for being an extremely tough cookie, and he's the real real deal, having been CEO and President of Arista, not to mention Island/Def Jam and now Epic.

So he's not just a novelty dude, he knows his sheite. Having said that, they inexplicably fawned over a couple of people who's performances, IMO, were overwrought and melodramatic, and horribly OUT OF TUNE. I understand choosing passion of performance over correctness of pitch - but I just thought in the effort to find this X Factor that they are maybe overlooking the fact that some of the people they're going nut job over aren't very good singers, in actuality.

Although this shouldn't surprise me too much, it's just the kind of thing Simon Cowell or LA Reid would drop in my lap to "fix".

I actually quite liked it.

Very interesting Fin! I have a problem with those shows because in my head it's all "They're doing this, this and this" for ratings and DH is (as usual) complaining about camera angles and shot lengths and lighting. We are no fun.

BTW Thought of you this weekend. My brother was telling a story about setting up a show for Jackson Browne. It involved getting a grand piano on stage and I'm thinking, "But you're a guy! My Fin is a woman!!"

Fin - thanks for your perspective as an insider. I may have to check it out. My major hesitation is Paula Abdul. I mean seriously, of all the (drunk) fish in the sea, they had to choose her....again?

I'm sure you're right Dew. The ugly side of reality TV.

CDMWR was inspired after I shared my sharing my very real fear that we'll turn into old ladies and wear our hair the way old ladies have worn their hair for generations, wear elastic waisted pants, and listen to old fashioned music. Because, my goodness, old ladies today look just like old ladies did 40 years ago when I was a kid! Everyone here assured me that we dont have to go quietly into old age and that we'll still have great hair and trendy clothes and listen to cool music. We're even going to have our own special retirement community to ensure we're living with like-minded hip old people. And one of our brilliant members created the CDMWR as our moto.

But it just occurred to me that hubby isn't hip, won't ever be hip. We have to make allowences for uncool spouses.

I have one print of a petroglyph that is in those general colors (it's on a salmon colored stucco wall).
That would work! Not sure if I can find an eggplant sofa within my budget, but your color ideas will definitely work.

Okay. Between Aconite and your suggetions, I just have to give up the bright vivid blues, it seems. The oranges, reds, greens and purples will all work well together. I guess I'll need to find another room to hang the huge painting of a peacock. The upstairs hallway would probably be a good place to hang that.

I watched it too. I liked it more than Idol. It's apparent that LA Reid is no slouch. Love that there's no age limit, giving people who had missed opportunities another chance. I also liked that the overall vibe of the show focused on the positives more than the negatives, unlike Idol where all the goofs were given too much mention. (Although the pants-down-dude should have been escorted off of the stage and the film should have been left on the cutting room floor instead of making it to TV.)

Didn't you like the drug rehab dude who sang his original song titled "Yo Homie?" I loved him. Just loved him. But I fear the odds of him staying clean are slim to none. Otherwise, I agree that some others they fawned over weren't ALL THAT.

Hmm, I don't mind her too much. I don't think she's drunk as much as she is a bit eccentric. She swears blind she's never been a drinker and I think she probably isn't. More like meds from all those dancing injuries. She provides a necessary counter point. That kind of judging role is a bit trickier than it looks, as her replacements quickly found out on AI. Which I haven't really watched for a while now, just can't be bothered.

And I know what you mean Dew, re lighting and stuff - I'm unbearable to watch those shows with - it's like you know too much. I used to work with Randy Jackson too, so I could say what he was going to say before he said it - not that anybody else can't do the same, at this point.

I did like him. He was very natural. He needs a little bit of work. My worry is that when they get them out of the amateur kind of setting and start trying to polish them up, that they'll lose whatever endeared you to them in the first place. And that dude, well he's fresh off the bus sober wise so it's a bit tricky. It's a lot of pressure for a newly sober person. OTOH, you can bet your azz they'll make him sign a big contract, and staying sober will be a big clause in it, and they'll probably assign him a sober minder - and if he falls of the wagon, they'll kick him off, because it's too much to bother with for an unknown artist.
