Does your fifth grader know how to use a condom? They may soon learn if they go to school in Washington, D.C.
The District of Columbia Office of the State Superintendent on Education is pushing out standardized tests for sex education. The District takes its authority to administer sex education tests to fifth, eighth, and tenth graders from the Healthy Schools Act of 2010.
The title is misleading. It makes it sound like 10 year olds are sitting around practicing putting condoms on or something. The actual sample question in the article is about why condoms are important and where to get accurate info. I do think it should be voluntary (parents can opt out).
Do I think birth control should be brought up at younger ages? Yes, as long as it's like pass said - talking about it and why it's important. Do I agree with showing younger kids actual condoms? No, I don't.
Of course, I also believe that kids should be able to come to their parents about these things. Unfortunately, some can't.

Yeah, I'm going to believe "Charisma News" isn't slanting the story at all. Honestly, some people will swallow any story as long as it doesn't actually involve Elvis, three aliens in the Senate, and Bat Boy.
DC has some of the highest rates in the country of pregnancies and STD's among teens. I say kudos to them for being proactive. The testing is information gathering, more like a survey, and the results will be used to modify the sex ed already in place in DC schools.
When I was pregnant with our 19 year old, there was a girl that had a baby a couple days after I did....she was 13 when the baby was born, 12 when she got pregnant...in 6th grade.
I have a fifth grader. She may know what a condom is, but I don't think so. I would be okay with them discussing this in middle school, but I think it's too early. Then again, maybe it's not for some kids. As a parent, it's really unpleasant having to think about dealing with this when the kids are still young. The reality is that we have no choice.
