My school is taking the K class on their first field trip to a pumpkin farm / petting zoo. Some genius has decided to book a place 52 miles away on a busy highway. There are a zillion farms close by - where all the previous K classes have gone. I have no idea why the choice was made to go so far...but would you let your 5 year old go? They leave at 8:45am and get back at 12:30pm. So hardly anytime there...seriously thinking of skipping this one.
Yep... I let my son go on a field trip that was over 90 minutes away (to a zoo and aquarium), and this was all the special needs children. He did just fine, I didn't have to chaperone.
That is some poor planning. They'll spend more time on the bus then they will on the field trip. If my child wanted to go I'd let them go. If they didn't want to go I'd let them skip it and take them to one of the closer farms myself.
From my perspective, it wouldn't be a big deal to travel that far for a field trip... but everything is a bit longer of a drive from here. Our schools have tour buses with bathrooms in them because it is not unusual to travel many hours for a football game or field trip.
The length of time they have allowed surprises me though - like you said, not much time there. Most of the trip will be spent in traveling to and fro.
How many chaperones are going? If you are comfortable with the number of people going and have no qualms about the place they are going to... what is the concern? The length of time on the bus? The safety of traveling via bus that far?
I guess I am annoyed at both poor (idiotic) planning and for taking 5 year olds so far on a busy highway when there are at least 6 farms within 5-10 mile radius with all the same stuff (pumpkin, petting zoo, etc.).
