at my daughters school ,(9th grade) in PE there will be a swim unit and boys and girls have it together? Why is this allowed? Wouldn't this make girls feel uncomfortable, being in a bathing suit around boys. Wouldn't boys use this opportunity to harass or humilate girls

Where do you live? Around here, it is pretty typical for boys and girls to be at a pool or at the beach together during the summer.....We didn't have swimming offered at my HS (or my kids) but I'd guess the boys have just as much potential to be embarrassed/humiliated as the girls. Most boys really are not too interested in humiliating girls.

And there's always that problem with "shrinkage."

OP, don't sweat it.

I see no reason it should not be allowed.
Boys and girls swim together and see each other in suits all the time at pools and beaches. Makes no difference that the swimming is at school.

The operative phrase is "bathing suit". The kids will not be naked.

Relax.

It would be an inefficient use of time and resources to break their swim PE classes out separately.

As long as they arent skinny dippin I see NO problem.

Skinny dippin should be restricted to summertime.

We had co-ed swim classes in the 1970s! It was very uneventful. OP, you're worrying needlessly.

Are you talking about the lesson being co-ed (no problem), or the changing rooms being co-ed (problem)?
I agree with the other posters the lesson being co-ed is no problem. Girls and boys meet at the public pool or at neighbours all the time at that age! Don't forget, the girls will not be wearing bikinis for this, they will wear swim suits, which cover a reasonable amount.
