My 11 year old daughter has been invited to a BOYs birthday party. Disadvantage of being new in town, she doesn't know him well enough to know what to give him. We used to attempt to give an actual GIFT in the $10 vicinity, OR if all else failed we gave a $10 Target or Game Stop gift card.
Gift cards are good - there is too much variation in what boys this age like. My boys are 11 and aren't in transformers, Legos, etc - but many of their friends are. It's all about sports for my guys! So a gift card is great.
