What is the going rate for daycare for an infant (per day)?

A lot will depend on your area and whether you mean in-home daycare or in a playschool.

Here in Arkansas, about $12-15 for in-home, $25+ for a playschool, 9 hour day.

In the Northeast, full time daycare (at a center) for an infant is anywhere from $1000 - $1500 a month, depending on the center.

Yes, it depends on your location. Weekly ater-school care for school-aged children at a center here runs between $150-$300+. Full day for an infant would be much higher, several hundred dollars a week. In home babysitters charge $10-20 an hour.

I pay $25.00 a day in Boise, Idaho for a small in-home daycare. My daughter is 9 months old and we started when she was 6 months. I would have expected to pay more when she was a newborn.

Infant rates are the highest, and it truly does depend on the area. The year we lived in NM the child care for our son was half of the cost it was in MA and ME.

You'd get more info calling around to centers in your area. It will vary based on where you live. I used to pay about $35/day. That was for a toddler. Infants will be more. That was also in a relatively low cost area.

In most cases your cost will be on a weekly basis, not daily, as very few providers will offer part time care for infants due to the low ratios allowed of infants.

As stated it will vary widely across the nation and even vary within your own area.

You may find care for as low as $100/week or for as high as $500/week.

The best bet is to search your own specific area to find out the typical charge for infants.

I agree with everyone here that it varies depending on your area. I got a very good rate when DD was in the infant room at day care. It was $185/week. I know that the same center now charges $235/week. One of my friends had a baby in day care at the same time I did. She was only 2 towns over and while I was paying $185/week, she was paying $295/week.

ETA: Here is an article that came out this year showing an average for some states. Illinois is listed on here: http://www.daycarematch.com/child-da...care-rates.asp

It is variable. I had four kids, two in school, a toddler, and a baby, and found hiring a full time nanny to be the best deal for me. No, she was not "perfect" Mary Poppins, but she loved my kids, and helped me a great deal. BTW, she was, gasp, illegal! She came here from England, on a visa, and just never went home.
