Hello. My son is currently in 9th grade and I'm pretty worried. He goes to a suburban school that's supposed to be "academically rigorous", but I learned that his school is a complete breeze. He NEVER has homework and spends obscene amounts of time on the computer, often playing Civilization 4. He barely studies and is able to coast by with straight A's. When I confront him about his work ethic, he always brings up his grades, saying that they're great. I've seen him operate-he does his homework extremely quickly with no regard to accuracy, quality, or neatness. But the teachers choose to grade it on COMPLETION, meaning he just has to write scribbles and will get full credit. He often gets grades in the 80-89% range on simple tests involving just memorization and I know he can do better than that. Despite getting B's on the tests, he still gets A's due to stupid homework completion grades. I can't believe how they call his classes "Honors" when you can just scribble down random answers for homework and barely study for tests and still get an A. I am scared about how my son will survive college when they won't take this BS. And this "completion mindset" isn't going to fly in the real world.
We've tried forcing him to study for a measly 90 minutes a day, but he finds ways to sneak around it by playing with his Nintendo DS under his textbook. I have ZERO support from the teachers, who say he's "doing great", even though they've never actually seen his homework and just do cursory completion checks. WHAT SHOULD I DO?
Well, the DS has already been sold, but he has friends who lend him theirs. As for his computer, it's been taken away, but his sibling lets him use theirs when I'm not looking.
He's getting A's, he's doing well on test, he obviously KNOWS the information, please tell me what the problem is?
Some kids just don't need to study that much and if he's getting good test grades he obviously actually gets the work.
