I'd be interested to know if his attorney referred to him as a "kid" in court.

It's been done. Attorneys trying to make their client seem young (and thus innocent) in the jurors' eyes.

I think it does a huge disservice to assume that the jury refers to him as "kid" as a means of suggesting that he's a kid, therefore he's excused from drunken driving.

It's an insult to children - most of whom don't drink and drive. Assuming that a kid should be expected to do that - is insulting to kids everywhere.

Default My thoughts exactly

It's really just a figure of speech, like calling someone "that guy" or "that dude" - when you get older, it's just a term you use for people a lot younger than you, which really doesn't mean anything more than calling someone a guy because they're male.

Calling someone a "kid" just points out the generational difference, it doesn't mean you think they're child-like.
I use kid, or kids all the time--also "you guys", even if it is a group of women. No offense or intent to deminish a person's stature intended.

My kid is almost 29.

I had been married for years and had 5 kids by 27...he's not a kid. Had someone called me kid at that age I would have been terribly insulted.

But "idiot"? Yes, he's an idiot for even getting one DUI, much less two.

A 27 year old is not a "kid". I don't know why someone would think that. At 27, you're a grown adult, both physically and mentally. Apparently this one isn't too bright though, if he's had 2 DUIs already. Most 27 year olds or people around that age bracket I know are married, with a home, jobs, and have a couple of kids.

Anyone that is 15 and younger is a "kid". 16-18 would be a youngster. 18-20 would be a young adult, 21 and older would be a true adult.

For Pete's sake, you kids sure do take things literally.
