I'm watching last night's Parenthood (yes, I realize it is fictional ). SPOLIER ALERT Haddie gets into her dream school, Cornell. Her parents discuss the cost and urge her to keep her options open. Bottom line is they can't afford to send her. So, should they be able to just say "no", or should she still have the option of going if she's willing to take out loans to pay for it? Who gets to decide, and is a HS senior able to understand the burden of coming out of school with 10's of thousands in loans?
Well, fictional because Cornell has income based tuition and they wouldn't be paying what they said they would pay on the show....
We have told our kids to look at any and every school that interests them. They have an idea what they like, size of campus, programs offered, etc. We have visited several schools already (they are juniors). We have talked about final costs and what is reasonable to pay. Until they get their final financial aid package from each school, we don't know how much any of them really costs so we aren't limiting them by the initial price tag. They each have about 4 schools so far that they really like. They would be fine going to any of them if the final price is right.
The operative concept of 'parents' is that they provide guidance to children who otherwise have no adult concept of reality. A good place to start with college selection is Peterson's College search. You enter your criteria (majors, location, cost, etc) and get a list of colleges meeting that criteria.
I used to counsel parents and students about college and was amazed at how many parents simply depended entirely on their kids to (1) Decide what they wanted to be when they grew-up; (2) Select a college and a major, (3) Figure out how to get a scholarship or pay for college, etc. In many cases, I believe the dis-engagement had more to do with suddenly confronting the reality (as parents) that they had not saved any/enough money to help pay for it ... and were thus, setting their kids up for failure in their 'college search' efforts.
While on the subject, another crazy parent thing is to fail to give their kids guidance in the realities of trying to earn a living ... with a meaningless liberal arts degree.
I told my kids they could go to any State school they wanted...haha. That's what they did.
So far for us the state schools are going to be more expensive than the private schools we have looked at....which is why we won't limit our kids that way.

Depends on the state- some state school systems have excellent options.

Ours are fairly cheap. I found a college and a major and basically told my daughter "you should do this" because it seemed to fit her. I wasn't going to force it but she didn't have any better ideas and once she visited the campus she was sold. Everyone is different.
