Or what happens if a piano falls out the sky and crushes him? That'll make them think twice about letting him outside.

i am with julia, i don't like this, but i also don't see what the big deal is. I can't fathom how this video would make a viewer cry. "toughening up" is totally normal to me -- that said, i don't think exposing a kid of that age to cold is a very effective way to do it, because it doesn't really impart any good lessons, as there is no decision-making involved on the child's part. I think manual labor is a way more effective method of having the child grow up through enduring discomfort.

Being cold doesn't cause pneumonia. Pneumonia is caused by an infection in the lungs. As for shock, I don't know ... it was 15 degrees out this morning and I was outside barefoot. It's not fun being cold, and yes, it can hurt, but I don't think the kid was in mortal peril.

Didn't any of you see the video of the little girl run over TWICE and ignored in China? The Chinese are completely different than we are. Our humanity and treatment of our children are one of the big things that set us apart.

yeah THAT was disturbing. It was more than twice.

To me, though, that's so extremely different from the snow video that I have a hard time figuring how you're comparing the two.

Possibly. Then again I am a Swede and a naturalist.

Yes, he wore shoes.

China contains over a billion people, many of whom protested the video. I don't think that video represents China any more than that Dr. Phil mom represents the U.S. Do we really want to be judged by OUR crappy parents?

i just read some news about this.

Not only did the father MAKE this chinese boy walk in snow it was 17 degrees out. COME ON Jjustjulia that is just wrong. and the dad reportedly dunked the child in 25-degree water just weeks after he left the incubator, and made him climb a mountain at age 2. father give him cold ice cream on cold winter days to train his stomach to get used to

this guy in insane and no child should be treated like that. Video: Chinese Dad Makes Nearly-Naked Son Exercise On Snowy NYC Street: Gothamist

I said it was appalling in my first post. I just do not equate it with torture or beatings, which is how some of the other readers seem to react.
