. I think all parents do that really, i know my parents do. And with my little sister i fib to her about things like why she needs to take a bath, or go to bed earlier then the adults.

I thought all parents did too, just about the degree in which they do it. But on another thing i post on with parents this was brought up and so many are saying that they are 100% honest even when its hard. They tell their small children that santa isnt real and all the nasty truths about the world

Well we never had a belief in santa either, and it wasn't really a bad thing to us as kids. I mean most of the lies are the basic things i mentioned or why its okay for adults to do some things and kids not.

I think that believing or not believing in santa isnt a bad thing or a good thing. It just is your families thing. But sometimes lies need to be told to protect the child or to make things easier in general. And to think that not lying to your children will mean they wont lie to you is just false. All children lie, its just a developmental thing, so why talk all the magic and innocence out of the world? You know what i mean?

For things like Santa and tooth fairy, I reflect questions back to them, with what do you think? and the like. Is writing "from Santa" on a gift tag lying? I guess.

Otherwise no I don't lie to the kids. I will defer questions, fail to answer them if they are not ready. Or answer them with a mind to only including the level of detail that is right for right now.

Santa and the Tooth Fairy aside, I said comforting things to my small children like, "Don't worry, Mommy and Daddy will live to be very old, so don't worry about that now," "Yes, good guys always win," and "There are no such things as monsters."

I don't make empty promises like "I will never let anything bad happen to you" and "I will never die," but I do sweeten some truths until they are old enough to deal with them.

How do you defer questions? What tactics do you use? At what age is "less detail" not longer necessary. For example if you see a car accident and their is blood. And a person being put in an ambulance, at what age to you (if asked) say they are badly injured and talk about the fragility of life, as opposed to saying they are going to the hospital just to get checked out.
