The most useful information you can get is from other parents in the community. One important decision to make is whether or not you want your child to enter piano competitions or not. Some teachers want their students to compete, others not. Some encourage regular recitals, some focus on technique, some focus more on contemporary music and fun. What are you hoping to get out of it?

I think Zimbochick is right on this one. Understand the goals of the lessons and use parents' experience.

What age is the student? If you're talking a young student, then group lessons would be best. If older, then get referrals from potential teachers and call them.
