1. Companionship. It's true that children may have friends and companions who are not siblings. But only siblings follow them around when their parents move. And siblings are far more likely to be around when they are 60 or 70.

2. Give nieces and nephews to your own siblings.

3. Give cousins to your nieces and nephews.

4. Give aunts and uncles to your grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

5. Give grandchildren to your parents.

6. Give grand-nieces and grand-nephews to your aunts and uncles.

7. Give a few more hard working, God-fearing, innovative, loving, loyal, and well-bred people to your community. We need them.

8. Social safety net. A large family is better than welfare. Adult relatives, if raised properly, will be there for each other when times are tough. With many children, you don't need to worry much about being provided for in your retirement.

9. Mental health. A family culture, common memories, etc. provide emotional security. This is only possible among people who grew up together.

10. Increase the probabilities of living close to relatives in your old age. Some children will always move away. But the more children you have, the greater chances that at least some will stick around.

Is that ten already? Better make it eleven:

11. Save Western Civilization. The West is in peril from low birthrates and a population implosion. There aren't enough taxpayers to support the social security system. We have to import nurses from abroad just to take care of our own elderly. Everything from the housing collapse to illegal immigration is exacerbated by low domestic birthrates. Etc. Only a new baby boom can reverse these problems, but time is short ...

I am somewhat offended that you think the only way to have family culture, common memories, etc is by having THREE or more children.

So only children are not members of a family? Or even siblings if there are only two?

Seems strangely self serving that you think nothing else except a large family warrants the name.

If you have four kids, you can have your own volleyball team.

You bet.

Or a string quartet!

With six kids, we have our own folk music band.

Here's my favorite family band:

You really need more than three people to have a family culture. A family of three (dad+mom+1 child) or even four will by necessity draw much more heavily from outside the family. There's nothing wrong with that, but it's less of a distinct family culture.

With respect to the social safety net aspect, in times of personal or economic crisis, the more the better. Our forebears survived the Great Depression because they had lots of relatives - a cousin had a spare room, an uncle had a job, a sister could send a little money, etc.

In order to get past this demographic slump, our birthrate needs to climb well above the 2.1 replacement level again.
