All three of my kids have them on their molars. Not one cavity in 15 years.
I think if your kids' molars have very deep grooves, they are essential.
I will say that when the older kids got them, they were covered by dental insurance. By the time the third one came along and we had crappier dental insurance, they were not covered. I would call it expensive; this dentist charged about $55 per tooth.
One thing I have heard dentists recommend that is NOT necessary is the process where they grind out the tooth and replace it with a bonding material. This is not required for teeth in good condition.
Sealants are basically painted on the tooth surface.

Oh, certainly you have to brush and floss, with or without sealants.
I'm surprised your insurance covers that many dental visits.
I have sealants and I am so thankful! No cavities in my molars but do have 1 in my other teeth. I'll definitely get them for my sons.
