This is the same kid who wanted to buy gifts for her entire class at Christmas. She wants to knit him something since I am teaching both girls to knit. She wants to make him a change purse or "thingy for his ipad". I hate to discourage her and I've tried to direct her to write a poem or draw a picture but she insists on knitting him something. Her retainer check up is in 6 weeks and she would have time to knit him a scarf even. Would this be appropriate? She is feeling bad because 2 visits ago she was a real brat and delayed the whole clinic with a hissy fit (one of the negatives about a 10 y.o. in braces).

I think that's very sweet and by all means, let her. Is there something smaller than a scarf she could knit? Just so she doesn't get discouraged?

I think the picture would be best because if it's a family-oriented place he'll probably put it up on the wall. She's a happy customer, and she can see her handiwork on later visits.

If she insists on knitting, how about a pouch for sunglasses or reading glasses? Or a sleeve for an iPod or phone?

good suggestions. I'm afraid I would end up doing most of the scarf and her tennsion is much tigher than mine and it would look funny. We'll talk some more this weekend.

How do you knit teeth?

i think a wallet would be a good idea as he much be swimming in money given how expensive braces are.

Whatever it is, it must include jellybeans and/or gummy bears.

A card. Tell her that he probably can't wear a scarf while he is working on teeth but he can put a card in his office.

I agree.

It's a good time to remind her that a gift is about the recipient, not the giver.

She should give him something HE would truly appreciate, not just something she wants to make.
