Should young children be able to use Facebook?
And if so, under what conditions?
Those are the questions bloggers and Twitter users are batting around the Internet on Monday following a news report saying Facebook is looking into ways it could let kids under the age of 13 use the site with parental consent.
NO!! They have no business even with parental consent and assistance in set up, parent knowledge of passwords and ect...
My son got our permission last summer ( 14 going on 15) and was officially a freshman in HS. It was not needed prior to this. I still have his info and do random drive-by's and monitor his page, does he like it? Of course not. I check who he accepts, the relationships and so forth. One can never be to careful. But he trusts me, knows that I do this for the better good. You would not believe how many over 18 girls request him and I reply with "go find a guy your age" you do not know my son all the way from Wisconsin!
No, what for? Kids are naive and tend to reveal personal information to strangers. You really don't know who you are communicating with online. If kids need to talk to their friends, use the phone.

I think 13 is too young to have a FB, but I know of many kids under that age to have accounts. When my kids get a FB account, I will set the password, my kid doesn't need to know it...they can use it when I am home and sign on for them, I will also be montoring their accounts ie; pictures, friends, messages, comments, etc.. I may be overprotective but the kids in my home are my life, and God forbid I do anything that could bring harm to them or allow harm to happen.
I can't even get my 10 y.o. to answer the phone, talk on the phone etc. But they do like to communicate with us by e mail and we send each other funny videos and pictures. I doubt my kids have any interest in FB but even if they did it won't be happening for years. They do tell me some of their friends already use FB. Where are the parents?
It is because of FB and other social networking/sharing sites that the future form of social networking will return to secretly passing/distibuting notes and letters to communicate in private.
