All good advise but in the end can't be in the room with them all the time and they will cross the line or whatever else without even realizing it while playing video games.
Easy. You start teaching them to be aware of their surroundings. You let them know that getting close to the screen is unacceptable.
And if they don't learn you take their controllers away from them. After the screaming dies down you tell them that the controllers will be returned to them in 24 hours for a test run. If they still get too close to the screen you take the controllers away from them and make sure they know why. They need to know there's a price to pay if they don't think about what they're doing. (They can. Right now there just isn't a need for them to.)
My two young boys play Nintendo Wii on a large LCD screen on a three foot stand in a playroom. The problem I have is they tend to stand very close to the screen while playing (like 1-2 feet away). Even if I tell them to back up a few feet they eventually end up inching back close to the TV as they become engrossed in their game (they are standing most of the time).
Any ideas how I can keep them at a better distance as I am concerned about their eyesight? I consider placing large pieces of furniture in front of the TV as a last resort...
I would put something in front of the tv they have to stand behind. It sounds like they're just getting so into the game they're not paying attention to where they are standing.
Get an invisible fence and put collars on them. Bzzzzt!
Actually it will not damage their eyesight, but it is annoying when they stand too close. However playing X-box or snyhting requiring staring at a fixed distance object for hours and hours can cause problems down the road. What you need to do is make them move around while playing closer and further. Get them Connex or whatever it is called. Or get an Erg machine and make them row while playing. Anythig to change the distance frequently so they are not focused ont eh exact same distance for 10 -15 hours a day.
