Being close to the television screen doesn't do any damage to the eye- that's an ages-old myth.

If you don't stand behind "x" then the video game goes away, this worked like a charm with my little brother and nephew.

My husband works in IT. If it plugs in and turns on, then believe me, we have it. I don't hate technology.

If I had to tell my children repeatedly that they were standing too close to the television while playing Wii, then they would not play it anymore. I can't stand it when kids are told to do something and they don't do it.

I'm also assuming the OP's kids are old enough to understand being told to back up from the tv. If they aren't, then they're too young for video games.

Place a line of tape on the floor. Every time they move past that line, make them sit with their backs to the TV while it's on for 5 minutes. Dont know if that works, but it sounds like it would to me.

Place a couple small pieces of tape on the floor at what you consider an appropriate distance. If you catch them standing or sitting closer than that, the Wii is taken away for a day. Easy enough.

1. The "myth" has more to do with the radio waves from TV antennae causing brain cancer, than eye damage. That myth was also false, and is now irrelevent since TVs don't come with antennae sticking out of them anymore.
2. The myth that grew from the TV antenna myth, about eye damage, has basis in truth. Your eyes have to shift their depth of focus when looking at big things up close. This can cause eye strain, when it's done regularly. Eye strain can lead to focus problems, and weakness in the eye muscles, which can, in turn, lead to vision impairment. That is why, when mom sees that Junior is holding a book only 3 inches from his face to read it, mom gets him reading glasses. Because at 3 inches away, he is straining his eyes to read it, and wearing those glasses reduces the strain and allows him to read it at a less stressful distance.

I have 20/20 vision but wear reading glasses for the same reason. I can read the words, but I have to squint to do it, and squinting causes eye strain, which can very definitely progress to vision impairment. Instead, I get to relax my eye muscles, not squint, and wear the cheapo 1.25x from the dollar store.

What's this have to do with those kids? Everything. They need to move away from the screen. Explaining all that to them will fall on deaf ears, but this should be a pretty simple problem to solve. Parents have done it for millenia, even before electricity. "You may play/relax in this manner, or you may not play/relax. Period. Why? Because I'm the mom, that's why."
