The majority of the kids in our public school wear the school t-shirts sold as spirit wear at the school store, quasi uniforms really. There is quite a variety, and it's cost effective too.
We don't buy new backpacks unless the old ones have a lot of wear or unless they need a bit bigger size which is possible if you had one for a small child who is now going to jr. high or high school.
If you get Jansport or SwissGear (from Staples), you never have to buy a new one. They have a no questions asked lifetime warranty
My kids have separate clothes for school and non-school. I don't see the point in allowing them to play outside in khakis and polos.
I don't see the point in having twice the laundry. I guess I'm just lazy but my kids wear their school uniforms all day unless they have practice after school.

As did mine. (As did I.) And part of the reason was they played after school. I didn't want their good school clothes ruined with a rip in the knee or stains that couldn't be washed out. School clothes. Play clothes.
gosh I thought everybody had school clothes, play clothes. We even have weekend clothes. Kind of ratty knock- around- the -house- don't- go- anywhere who- cares- if- it's- stained- or- ripped clothes. I think this comes from me having gardening clothes and shoes which in no times get really grody but are still good for gardening. We get a lot of wear out of our clothes. The girls sleep in their big brother's old rock concert t's and when it is pajama day at school I have to go buy a nice pair of "public pj's". moan.....

That is what I said. However there is always a reason. "Billy wrote on it and it is embarrassing." "It has juicy juice stains all over it" "It is dirty" "The strap broke" "It is too small" "It is too large"
Of course these excuses come form Mrs. J. I think she just likes taking the kids to get new ones. She wants the first day of school to have an air of new and exciting to it.
I usually end up using theold backpacks as luggage for overnight business trips.
I could give them some new and exciting chores to do in the morning before school. Would that do the same thing?
Regarding uniforms. Are the uniform kids in private schools or are there public schools which require uniforms? I always thought uniforms = private, expensive schools but it sounds like some kids need them for public schools. Right or wrong?
Both. Some private schools some public. In the public schools the uniforms were "optional" Maybe that is reqruied I do not know, but they made it clear that "optional" was not really meant to mean optional.
Shucks...I just spent $200 at Costco on socks, underwear, t shirts, a sweatshirt, and school supplies. We have not even hit the mall yet. Haircut tomorrow, shoes...the money blows out faster than it comes in...
