I don't want to be called Ms. last name because I like being called by my first name. I like the familiarity and casualness it implies. And its the culture here too, and as an immigrant I think I ought to try and fit into the native culture as much as I can.

It clearly is regional (and, sorry, yes, I suppose I could have searched on this topic first), but the odd thing to me is that I am born and raised in the Northeast and this was the custom I became used to growing up. You live in the deep South and think the complete opposite. Conventional wisdom would have things switched around. That in and of itself is interesting.
