Everyone is entitled to their opinion but the truth is, spanking is not illegal or harmful. It has not only been an accepted form of discipline since time began, it is preferred as the most effective by most people. The most disturbing comments I've seen are from individuals who compare children to adults and God forbid, even animals. This is a ludicrous attempt at disarming those who disagree with them. These comparisons do not withstand scrutiny at the lowest levels. Nowhere do civilized parents determine how to raise children based on the expectations common for the discipline of adults or animals.

Its illegal in 44 countries. Plenty of people don't consider it the preferred or most effective form of discipline and plenty consider it to be rather uncivilised.

It has been shown to be harmful...and it doesn't work....and is illegal in many places.

It certainly is illegal in many countries.. and rightly so.. what sort of moron wants to inflict pain on a defenceless child.. bullies thats all you are. your not intilling respect, your instilling a hatred , resentment and fear..
The fact the lady was white is moot. Your friend was arrested for hitting her son,and her actions were enough for a total stranger to call the police to protect the child. If she beats the child in public, I wonder what she does behind closed doors?
It has not been shown to be harmful, and millions of people didn't see that it works (at least in some cases) it wouldn't be so common.
The problem is that parents are not really observant about what happens in this case. Spanking stops the immediate behavior, but is ineffective in the long term.
For example, Dennis Embry from the University of Kansas researched spanking for running into the street. It was not just spanking, but scolding, reprimanding and nagging that did not work.
Summer 1987 issue of _Children_ magazine, he writes:
Quote:
"Actual observation of parents and children shows that spanking, scolding, reprimanding and nagging INCREASES the rate of street entries by children. Children use going into the street as a near-perfect way to gain parents' attention."
The Family Research Laboratory of the University of New Hampshire conducted a large study involving over 3,000 mothers of 3 to 5 year old children during the late 1980's. The women were interviewed in 1986, 1988 and 1990. The found that 63% of the mothers had spanked their child at least once during the previous week. Among those that spanked, they hit their children a little over 3 times per week, on average. The researchers found that the children which were spanked the most as 3 to 5 year olds exhibited higher levels of anti-social
behavior when observed 2 and 4 years later. This included higher levels of hitting siblings, hitting other children in school, defying parents and ignoring parental rules. Dr. Murray Straus, the co-director of the Laboratory noted how ironic it is that the behaviors for which parents spank children are liable to get worse as a result of the spanking.
The stocks probably were a pretty good deterrent, as far as that goes.
If they worked so well. ...why did they fall out of fashion? Could it be that they didn't work either?
