How do you steer the conversation away from their little angels and onto something more universal, in which you can relate?

"How 'bout those Pirates?"

"What's going on at work?"

"What are you making for dinner tonight?"

"I noticed you drive a [fill in the blank]. I was thinking of getting one of those. How do you like it?"

Not rocket science ......
(unless you meet an actual rocket scientist.)

Do you REALLY know people who do this?

If you just want to rant about someone, go ahead and do that.

If you REALLY want to know how to deal with a tryhard parent, my advice is to say, "Wow, that's great! You must be very proud."

Then move on to something else.

April, your lack of imagination when choosing new user names is very disappointing. You can do better.

I only know one person that wants to talk about her child all day, every day. I just avoid her.

Most parents I know want to talk about anything but their children when they have the opportunity to converse with an actual adult!

I have to give her credit for starting a less snarky thread than usual this time. It really is a thinly veiled complaint, though.

Tell them to stop talking about their children, you are pissing off whatever amount of people by excessively talking about them and ou are living vicariously through their children to an unhealthy extent. And I uspect you'll say that or somethign more extreme when they 'push you' frome xcessive talking and you "blow up" on them.
