Have a buddy who is a lawyer? Have him knock out a letter on letterhead threatening action. That'll get a response.

But why in God's name would you allow your 12-year-old to take something like that to school? Have you lost your mind?

Agree with others here. Can't believe that a school would keep a laptop. Unless they suspected it was stolen property or something out of the ordinary and were getting police involved. Or if there was something illegal on the laptop (child porn) and they were contacting authorities.

My school tried to pull something similar with me.

I was 19 and a senior (extra semester because I missed a whole semester due to mono) and they took my phone away and I went to pick it up and they wouldn't release it to me they would only release it to my mom which wasn't legal because it was my property seeing as I was an adult, I also couldn't sign myself out but that is another story....

Anyways my mom couldn't quite make it in time before the office closed but she was on her way and they tried to make me leave but I just sat in the office and refused to get up. My mom walked in at the same time the security guard did.

They tried not giving it back to even her but she called her lawyer friend in another state and he talked to them and told them they legally had to.

They gave it back to me before she could even hang up. Schools don't want legal trouble.

I guess if this topic has proven anything it's that if you have children in school it's important to retain a lawyer as sad as that may be. I just don't get it, do schools go looking for administrators at the local ghetto or something? I bet if you gave all admins an IQ test most would be near mental retardation level (and I'm being serious).

Luckily I have a family lawyer who does all my stuff probono.
I'll use him when I have kids.

They like to give seniors who are 18 a lot of crap.

I once countered with I'm 18, I legally can live alone, own my own property, what do you still need my mother for aren't I supposed to be an adult now and handle my own life?

They had no idea how to answer.

There was Karl with a k....
Some chick who looked like Peter griffins sexually frustrated boss.
And two awkwardly tall like 6'7" super skinny mid level admins who took their jobs way too seriously.

We had uniformed security with head sets.
They had very tactical approaches to everything.
They ignored the things they should have been paying attention to.

.....um, because you personally have known, so MANY school administrators in your time? See, this is the kind of crap that keeps me away from CD.

We've heard nothing back from the OP and frankly, unless there is something ILLEGAL that the laptop is tied to, it's not being held. After an issue is resolved, confiscated items are returned. Clearly, IF the OP hasn't gotten the computer back, there is a damn good reason for it. Unfortunately, there seems to be a pattern of behavior in this family, which includes "a lack of accountability".

To me, it's completely retarded to go all ballistic on ALL school administrators, over the rantings of one parent, who seems to have a tendency to go off half-cocked, instead of having a rational, logical approach to situations.

It's not JUST this. Have you been living under a rock? There are stories after stories of admins being complete tools. For example:

Dad Goes To Pick Kids Up From School, Gets Arrested Instead

School Threatens to Expel Black Girl Being Bullied Over Natural Hair

School lawyer lied about 'arrest' of girl suspended for trying to help drunken pal, attorney says | Fox News

Just to name a few.

I also have had plenty of run-ins with school admins while raising my daughter, and I think 90% of admins are a freakin joke that I wouldn't even trust to make me a burger at mcdonalds.

One time my daughter at 16 got in trouble just for...get this...putting on too much makeup! The school called me and I eventually got them to relent, but the fact is it shouldn't even have gotten to that point in the first place! It's pretty obvious most admins are hired due to connections rather than competence.

There seriously needs to be a purging of most school admins since basic common sense is long gone.
