My oldest had/has cough variant asthma along with allergies and sounds a LOT like what the OP is talking about. Most people think of asthma as the "I can't breathe" thing but it's not always that. His dr treated him for allergies to start but that didn't seem to help so a trip to the asthma dr and we were amazed at how bad he was without having the breathing attacks.

Great suggestions on asthma and allergies. She's actually been tested, results for both being negative. But I do see the cough when she swims too, and when she is active. I feel like I need to see another asthma specialist. BUT...she does have the other arm tic, which leads me to believe that the cough is more of a tic especially it's come and gone. So confusing.

Maybe I should get her retested for asthma to be sure.

Have her checked for exercise-induced asthma. That can occur with no allergies involved. Do you live where it's cold/damp. That can trigger asthma and the related coughing as well. Is her arm tick associated with trying to get air in? People with asthma sometimes pull their arm/elbow towards their side when trying to breathe. It's a way to elevate the rib-cage to get air into the lungs.

If she's being invited to play dates it's a sign her tics aren't as bothersome as you may think. I'd let her go and be happy she's enjoying herself with her friends.

I don't understand why you canceled the play dates. Because the coughing might cause someone to think she's sick? Because you didn't want her in public with the tic? Because you were trying to relieve some stress?

My son has a couple tics that come and go. I don't do anything. I'm not sure what I can do. I assume it is stress bringing them out but it isn't always obvious exactly what is stressing him out.

I agree with the others that say to look into other causes of the cough. I don't think "tic" is the first thing that would come to my mind if my kid had a lingering cough.

It might be something called PANDAS. I think my daughter had it when she was younger - coughing and throat clearing tics after a cold. I asked her doctor about it and he didn't think much of my theory. Maybe 6 weeks later she had to go on an antibiotic for I think it was an ear infection and the tics stopped.

The play date was canceled because of the cold/fever, it had nothing to do with the tic, which came subsequently.

I have a nervous cough! People ask me if I am sick. I usually just say I have a deviated septum and have to breath through my mouth and it makes my throat dry. No one ever mentions it after that.

Son had a tic about that age where he would open his eyes very big to the point he looked "afflicted" Then he would pull his lower lid out. I was very worried. He finally told me he liked the little bubble popping sound and sensation.

Regarding ticks and what to do about them. Around here we just pull them off. Sorry I couldn't help myself. I live in the heart of tick country and I was wondering if ticks were showing up already in the middle of one of the coldest winters on record.

Tics come and go. In my children they rarely last more than a month. Just ignore them (even though I know it's hard).

It's TICS. "Ticks" are small arachnids that attach themselves to you and suck blood. There's a big difference in how to handle them.
