Agree 100%. Sports and activities are a great way to bond and pass on interests to the next generation.

No, they are especially embarrassed by parents who are a phony form of "cool."

For example, remember the dumb students in your class who got called on to answer and tried to use a big sounding word to conceal the fact that they didn't really know the answer, but then didn't even use the big sounding word properly?

That's the parent that kids hate. The one who tries to use a word of their "slang" to sound cool, but then doesn't even use it in the way that they use it.

If the parent is honestly involved in everything the kid does, then the kid and his friends will value the parent's opinion on such matters.

These are lifestyle choices, and I'm not the far off from the OP.

How is a couch potato made? One day at a time. One day you realize you *watch sports* and don't actually *do any* yourself.

When my eldest ran cross country, they offered that "parents could train alongside, too" on the weekend runs. Very quickly you saw the parents separate into two camps - the ones who would bust out the Burley/Bob/whatever baby jogger for the younger kid and trot the same route - vs the ones who, shall we say, preferred to chow-down at HomeTown Buffet while the kids got their Run-On. Outdoor Exercise, even something as mundane as riding a bicycle, was just something for 'kids', not adults.

I purchased an adult-size razor scooter, and we scoot along together. I know one day my youngest will want to wear lip gloss and nail polish, and hang out with girls her own age, where they talk about 'boy bands' or whatever, but until that day I will keep trying to be Cool Dad. YMMV.
