Are subcription services any good? (toys, parents, appropriate, child)

A friend of mine told me that there are subscription services that send you toys and useful parenting stuff etc. each month. Does anyone use these services? Do you know if they are any good or have any recommendation as to the good ones?

It's been a long time, but I used to subscribe to one that sent a box of craft supplies each month, along with directions on how to make the finished product. It was fun, the kids loved getting mail. It definitely wasn't the cheapest option, and if I had the creative gene I seem to lack, I would have passed. I can't imagine doing something like that for toys. Toys R Us or Target is too convenient.

Thirty years ago, when I was a new mother with a full time very demanding job, I subscribed to a toy service that mailed an age appropriate toy plus a 3 or 4 page booklet (your child at 4 months, your child at 5 months, etc.). It was a wonderful service which I kept up for about a year or a year and a half. It was fairly reasonably priced and I really liked it.
