We were struggling with not wanting our children to become the next "Mood Swing" meme and the difficulty [our laziness] of consistently uploading/emailing or printing/mailing photo updates to close relatives.

After some research, we've found that Google Circles lets you restrict photos to certain circles. So, you can drop grandma and auntie into the "allowed to see baby's photos" circle, and viola! A "safe" place to upload photos where they can be kept "private".

You can also restrict your photos/baby posts so that they cannot be re-shared by those who have access to them.

So, to summarize:

Positives:
+ Photos of your children can ONLY be viewed by people you choose.
+ Those people cannot re-share the photos with a single mouse click.

Negatives:
- Nobody actually uses google circles.
- The photos can still be re-shared by downloading and re-uploading (but so can emailed, or even old-fashioned film photos if your relatives are reasonably tech-savvy--ours are not, thank God.)
- Google probably still owns the photos (I'm sure it says somethig to that effect in the terms of service), and can do whatever evil things they want with them. So your kid probably goes straight into the NSA database or something.

This works great with google-paired devices, like nexus tablets, and their "auto awesome" software is pretty awesome.

Anybody else have suggestions for photo-sharing services that don't spread your children's photos thither and yon across every pedophile's and internet troll's screen?

Ummm.

All my fb pics are private. If I want someone to see a pic I would send it in a message.

Or better yet text it to the person.

But who knows...fb may become the new myspace (dead) and this circles the new fb.

Facebook also allows you to customize who sees certain pictures.
