As the dad, it was my wife's job to discuss sex with our daughter. I'm not sure how that went, as she (wife) wouldn't discuss sex with me, but she did say they'd had a little talk. As for my son, when I tried to have "the talk" with him, he cut me off. "Daaaad, we learn all that stuff in school these days." End of discussion.
And did he learn YOUR thoughts in school? There's a lot more to sex than the mechanics and forms of protection ya know. Like how to treat women, how to not pressure them, how to take "no" for an answer, how to not get women drunk to have sex, etc.

I don't really want to know and I hope there will not be any reason that I HAVE to know.

That said, we've talked about it enough that I've made it very clear that if he (or a partner) needs my support if anything "goes wrong" (broken condom, or whatever), I very much want to help.

I also have made condoms available in the house, his room, his backpack. And have made sure he knows wefts to obtain more (free).

this was a joke, but according to statistics, very little of the American population is waiting until marriage. i knew a girl in high school who had very conservative, traditional, STRICT parents who was blindsighted into believing that she'd be smited by God if she dared have sex before the band was on her finger. by freshman year at the local community college, she was pretty much the local escort for a cheap one night stand. she's now addicted to drugs and probably pregnant.
how do you enforce the "House Rule #19: Absolutely no sex until marriage" anyway?

Did any of us tell our parents when we lost our virginity?

Ya, didn't think so.

He learned that from the time he was a toddler. That's not a sex issue, it's a respect issue. My son was/is not perfect, but he is a gentleman and has always treated women with respect. He's always been a kind and loving soul.

I want to know when my sons lose theirs so I can high five them but I never want to know when my daughter loses hers. The unspoken assumption shall be that the wedding night will suffice! If she comes home pregnant I will try to find out which fertility clinic would be so irresponsible as to perform artificial insemination on an underage girl so I could promptly sue them.

Actually after further thought I don't want to know when the boys lose theirs either. They can high five each other. Besides, I'll be able to tell from the swagger.

It's no one's business but the two that are engaging in sex.

If they feel the need to talk about it, then fine, but I would hope that the parents are open minded and don't act all shocked or angry. Those would be good ways to close the doors of communication immediately.

Nothing short of a chastity belt or locking her in her room forever.

That's good to hear - it is a respect issue - one that needs to be further reinforced specifically for sex when the time is right.

My 20 year old daughter told me just after she lost her virginity (and I mean JUST after), my 18 year old son asked me to get him condoms because he and his girlfriend were getting serious (and she couldn't ask her parents), my 17 year old foster son came to me and asked if I could get the Plan B for his girlfriend because he had lost his virginity the night before and was worried he hadn't used the condom correctly, my 14 year old daughter isn't anywhere close to sex yet...

I appreciate that my children are comfortable enough to come to me and be open (some more than others). I have always told them that I will give them open and honest answers without guilt or embarrassment.

It was up to them if they told me or gave details...I try not to react strongly when my kids tell me things. I have found that immediate strong reactions are a good way to prevent them from approaching me the next time they need advice or help.
