I agree with this. As I parent I'd want to know too. But if I had just moved in, I would wait until I knew the parents maybe a little better.

Parents need to know if their kids are doing something that may prove harmful. Adults smoking weed? Meh. Who cares? But teenagers smoking weed is another thing entirely. Teenagers by definition are immature and unformed (my friends call age 14-19 "the stupid years") and getting high can get them into a lot of trouble. So I'd let the parents know, just as I'd let them know if I saw the kid outside downing beers by himself.

But yes, I would wait until I had developed some sort of a relationship with the parents.

After I'd told them, maybe they wouldn't care, maybe they'd get angry with me, maybe they wouldn't believe it, maybe they'd be shattered...who knows? You can't control their response or be responsible for it. All you can do is give them the information and let them take it from there.

I would never record another parent's child without their permission, or unless they were trespassing on my property. Nope, too many possibly bad scenarios.

Oh the new narc next door. Unless the odor is making you deathly ill, I'd select option # 3.

#3 for sure. The parents either already know or will figure it out on their own.

You guys are acting like it is some social high ground, etc, but what I am hearing is s lot of cowardice.

1. Record the kid for evidence and tell the parents.
2. Subtlety clue the parents into their son smoking.
3. Ignore it and let the parents find out.
Just walk up to the Dad and say, "hey listen, does Tommy have any extra ganja, my stash is running low. With me being new and all, I don't know where to score".
