(I need to keep this as anonymous as possible, but I'll do my best to illustrate the circumstances.)
There is a new baby in the family, but the mother is an expatriate who now lives in a different part of the world. As expectant moms usually do, she told us of the pregnancy and a few milestones along the way. She also let us know when the baby was born.
But apparently no pictures are forthcoming, as she's informed us that she and the dad want to forgo taking any digital pictures of the new arrival, and we're scratching our heads over this one. Now I can certainly understand their not wanting the baby to have a major digital footprint, for example by posting pictures on Facebook or other social media platforms. But being unwilling even to email some pictures privately seems overly cautious. The mother says they will send old-school pictures when they have a chance, but who even develops film anymore?
Is this aversion to digital baby pics a new trend?
FTR we do not belong to any culture where photography and other human images are traditionally avoided for religious reasons. OTOH, they do live in the German-speaking region of Europe, where people tend to be unusually sensitive, compared to most Western countries, to having themselves or their belongings/property randomly photographed.
yeah, she is f'n nutz. Though a lot of Europeans are caught up on this idiotic anti-USA (which means anti-technology) trend.
you mean they took a picture of my house
THE HORROR!
In Austria you can get a 10,000 Euro fine for driving with a dashcam in your car--25000 for each subsequent offense. Despite such a camera's obvious usefulness in determining liability in accidents, applicable laws place a greater value on the rights of bystanders or other, non-involved drivers and cars not to be photographed without permission.
