So we got the basics down packed. Cars, blocks, skates, dolls, etc, doodle art. What other toys should i consider getting? Also can you recommend some childrens books for their age?

Toys - anything by Melissa and Doug. Those are fantastic.

Children's Books - My kids at that age loved Pete the Cat, and everything by Mo Willams

The bigger legos (duplo blocks) are great for that age. We still have bins of them that they play with all the time, even though our oldest has many regular legos.

If you've already gotten all that stuff, why are you still buying more? Kids don't need that much stuff. They can only play with one at a time.

I would get them something that inspires their creativity and imagination: crayons, water based markers, rolls of paper, craft sticks, construction paper, safety scissors, foam shapes, glue sticks. Make them a "craft box".

Maybe you've already got enough. I know when my kids were that age they'd get really interested in one gift and ignore all the rest. My daughter spent a month playing with the box her toy piano came in, before she got around to playing with the piano.

Sometimes we feel pressure to keep buying and buying gifts and we have to just stop, take a deep breath, and realize that we did already buy enough, and that Christmas from a child's eyes is much more magical than it is from an adult's point of view.

As far as books, the Dr. Seuss books...the Foot Book, Nose Book, Hop on Pop, Green Eggs and Ham, etc. are great for your four year old because they teach rhyming and patterns that help get them ready for reading. Your two year old might like lift-the-flap books like the Spot series. The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a great book for kids...my kids are older and they still enjoy reading it sometimes. That's the book they reach for when we've got younger children visiting.

No they are not. My kids have Legos and have had them since the toddler age. They are by far one of those most popular toys in the house
