A cold, untreated, will go away in about 5 days.

A cold, treated in any way, will go away in about 5 days.

A seious burn, however, could take much longer to heal....

I like to stand over the dishwasher when in drying mode. Much better than a steam shower and you don't waste water...

Its more about keeping them comfortable and preventing complications then curing it.

I thought it was a given that colds can't be "cured." The remedies are mainly to treat the symptoms until the immune system clears out the virus. That said, some remedies do show "antimicrobial" properties, while others show a modest "boosting" effect on the immune system.
Best to focus on good overall health so you can get well quickly and develop better resistance the next time around.

You don't give young kids medicine for a cold anyway... But most people know not to stick their own or a kid's face over a pot of boiling water. What is wrong with people?

The steam has nothing to do with curing the cold, though. It simply eases respiratory symptoms. You don't get that close to the boiling water if you are just breathing the steam.

Not a parent here, but it is amazing to me that anyone would get close enough, or let a child get close enough, to a steam source to get burned.
