My parents live in Clear Lake and fiancee and I both work in the Texas Medical Center. I honestly want to live closer to the city or in Pearland with a housing budget of 350k; but the idea of my parents being a short drive away to take care of kids does make things convenient. Plus it'll save on childcare for a couple years.

Does living a short distance away from parents once you have kids that much more convenient? Kids are coming in about 2 years if everything is smooth.

Are you sure your folks want to babysit? Lol!

I personally would love to live closer to my folks if possible...not just for the daycare.

Why do you want to live near your parents other than presumably free child care? You have your own family, it's time to make your own traditions and life.

Not important to me because
A) Not close to my parents
B) They have zero interest in babysitting

That is still pretty close. When my husband and I had our 3 kids, we were 1500 miles from our parents. If you have kids, you should be prepared to do it on your own. You shouldn't be expecting your parents to do anything. Just my 2 cents.

Well some of my friends who has had kids recently do say that living near parents is convenient. Another plus would be that the kids would get more exposure to their grandparents which would form a closer relationship with them.

I do see your point tho and that's my small dilemma.

Absolutely. I do not expect any help from my parents. There is a convenience factor that if you need to go somewhere, parents are easily accessible. Do not get the impression that I expect parents to help me out

It's funny how you phrased this because you do imply that they are there to help just in case.

I know people who make it both ways: with parents close or a flight away. I would consider within the same city--even a large city--to be close.

You should consult your parents about caring for your child before you make plans for them to do so.
They may be busy having a life without children involved on a daily basis.
After that you should make a decision where to live based on the actual needs and desires of your family not your parents, siblings, in laws, etc.

It's important if you are close to your family and if you want your child to spend lots of time with your family. Having family provide childcare is wonderful for everyone if you have that luxury. Talk to your parents and make sure they feel the same.
