gotta put my two cents in, yes not only was Shirley a male name, but so was Lavern. note the spelling, if it is spelled Laverne (with an e on the end) it was a female name.

once knew a man named Felda after his mother. he hated the name and it made his life miserable.

Father in law's name was Marion and his first wife's name was Marian!

Knew a couple both named Terry- Terence and Teresa

went to high school with a guy named Ashley..pretty common in the south.

There was a guy named Robin in the class ahead of me in high school...nobody really thought anything about it and as far as I could tell he was pretty popular...of course he looked good, so that helped...
