I've always been told to sleep on my left side while pregnant (in the later months when my belly is big). Obviously sleeping on my stomach is out and sleeping flat on my back can put pressure on the vena cava and arteries and can cause other problems.
Well I set myself up to sleep on my left side every night with a pillow propped under my belly for support and one in between my knees, and it's comfortable and I'm able to fall asleep just fine. But EVERY NIGHT I wake up flat on my back and panic. I don't know how long I'm in that position but it freaks me out and I hurry and get readjusted to my left side, and then again I wake up who knows how much later on my back.
Anyone else worry about how they sleep? What do you do?
Your vena cava will be fine. Don't read TOO much. Cave women who didn't even know what a vena cava was managed to keep the species going. Just roll back over and get your rest.
Interesting.... back 25-30 yrs ago, I was told to sleep on my RIGHT side, because the heart is located *left of center*, and sleeping on the left side causes the heart to pump harder, due to the additional weight of the body. Sleeping on the right side makes it easier for the heart to pump.
Either right side or left side is fine; dont think too much. I am 28 weeks now and often when I wake up, I am on my back! Quickly readjust and roll back to the side.
Put a pillow behind you. It will help keep your position on your side, and if you roll over, it'll help you not be flat but at an angle. I was told left side because the blood flows all over "better" than the right side.

Yes, I was also told left side but my left arm hurts like crazy after a couple of hours of sleep that way. So, I was told, rolling over to the right side is better than lying down flat.

For me, my arms would fall asleep so by 30ish weeks, I would prop myself up with several pillows and basically sleep in bed in a reclined position. Worked well.
just sleep anyway that's comfortable for you....and enjoy that sleep cause once babys born, sleep will become an extremely rare pleasure.
