Being that most of those paying child support are men I am curious if anyone knows women that are the ones doing so, and if so, do you know why and about how much?
I knew someone who paid child support for her teenage son who decided to live with their father after the divorce. She had a very low income and since child support (at least in her state) is based on a percentage of your income she did not pay very much. Their eight year old daughter stayed with her after the divorce and she received child support from her ex-husband for the daughter. Since his income was substantially higher he paid more actual money to her (but the percentage was the same).
The 15 year old son wanted to stay with dad and finish HS in the same city and mom moved someplace new after the divorce.
Obviously a woman earning $10 an hour would pay less child support than a woman earning $15 an hour or a woman earning $100,000 a year. Don't most states do it by percentage of your income? Such as 18% for one child, 30% for two children and 40% for three children (or something like that)?
I know of a few. It was based on their income and number of children just like for men. They are paying because they make more then their ex, and/or they have less then 50% custody.

Yes, two. To support the children. And no, I do not ask anyone about that kind of stuff.

Don't most states do it by percentage of your income?
That's a starting point, but you can also do it by actual expenses. My kids do a lot of activities, and if we ever got divorced, my husband would be paying actual expenses, not a percentage.
I can think of one. Her ex is maybe disabled? He doesn't work, has psychiatric issues or something. She has to pay him some of her teacher's salary . Actually, her son lives with her, so I think she is actually paying spousal support. Dad does very little for the son, but once in a while will take him on a weekend trip with his GF. Who would want to date such a loser, I don't know.
The mom is only going to be paying child support if the kids live with the ex, which happens, but rarely. Otherwise, if you were the mom like me who the child lived with and who had a steady income, you are a mom who is actually SUPPORTING the child.

Each state has its own calculation for determining how much gets paid out in child support. Among other things, it depends on how many kids are involved, the annual salaries of each parent, the # of nights each parent has the kids, and whether it is joint custody, shared custody or sole custody.
In essence, there are too many factors for anyone on this forum to nail down whether a monthly $$ is considered "typical."
