My child went to an amazing private school last year. However, I had to put him in my neighborhood public because I need to get an evaluation for speech and ot services. Once I did that he would go back to his old school and my lawyer would deal with the board of ed. to have someone come to my home.
Problem he hates his school and is miserable. Yesterday, a child punched him in the face for his strawberries. I pack him lunch everyday and he is the only child that has lunch from home. He won't eat school lunch and comes home starving. Its been a problem this year so I no longer put a cookie in his box or a special snack. . I decided to observe his class and was disgusted. I actually feel bad for his teacher it is so bad. About four children there are clearly emotionally disturbed ( yelling, screaming, kicking chairs, throwing pencils at the other kids, running out the classroom). She had to sit on a child while I gathered the class to go to lunch. I also feel for the other children who want to learn. This is not a inclusion classroom there is no second teacher (NY LAW). Even the teacher told me she has complained all year long because they go into crisis everyday. No first grader should be scared to go to school. I don't what to do I am still waiting for a evaluation and it could be up to 60 more days.
Put your kid back in private school, find a developmental psychologist and pay for an evaluation, and then get a private therapist and pay for therapy. If you can afford a private school and a lawyer there's a good chance you can afford a private eval and private therapy.
Our insurance covered our eval except the copay ($25), although we had a medical diagnosis and a referral to the psychologist from the neurologist. Our insurance also covers therapy except for copay, and we go twice a week (combo of speech, OT, and ABA), so that's $50 a week, which is pricey but doable and really really worth it.
If you have the resources, you don't have to let the public school handle it. You can do it all yourself. Leave the free services for the folks who can't afford to pay for their own.
Pull him out and put him back in the school that he liked.
I don't know how it works in NY, but in some states, kids in private schools can still go to the public school for certain services. See if you could do that; otherwise, you might need to pay for the services yourself. But it's not worth it to torture your kid for free services unless there is absolutely no other way to make it work.
Private school was partial financial aid and lawyer is doing it pro bono. My insurance will pay for eval and speech but not OT(he really needs it). I am making an appt now. I will see how much OT cost. I may have to use my credit cards for now. I fear for his safety.

What kind of OT? If you have the will, you can research it online and buy a few books and teach it to yourself. Or, you can make an arrangement with an OT to go for a few sessions and have her give you direction on how to try and do some yourself. If it's just things like fine motor skills, you can absolutely do that yourself with a little direction. If we're talking severe sensory problems, that's a different beast.

He's having so many issues writing. He is still using the big line and it is very hard to read it. Mostly he has difficulty with his fine motor skills.
Good alternative for OP. What about those of us who can't afford private school and can't homeschool?
Then OP will have made life just a little easier for them by freeing up a spot in the classroom and with the public therapists. The teacher will have a tiny bit easier time for having one less student in the classroom, and the child who needs the free services will be one slot higher on the waiting list.
Would you prefer those who can afford private take all the free resources, so those who can't afford private have to wait? I thought not. I always try and save the free resources for those who cannot get them any other way.

Most private schools offer financial aid and grants. At my children's school 40% of the kids are on some kind of aid.
OP ask about Title 1 funding. My kids' private school provides resources under Title 1, even if your school doesn't currently have it they may be able to be reimbursed for any special services they provide. Look into it and make the sacrifice and send him back. Best of luck.
