When my kids still went to a regular school, they rode their bikes there. I rode with them, then I'd ride back up to the school when it was time to leave and we'd ride home together.
The school is two blocks away. On the bikes, that's a 5 minute ride. The bus took 45 minutes because it went all over the neighborhood first.
I take my high schooler to school sometimes. School doesn't start until 8 but the bus picks up at 6:55 since it goes all over the neighborhood and then drops the kids off at 7:30. We can leave the house at 7:40 if driving...my son loves that extra 45 minutes of sleep...
I would if I didn't have to work. Catch the bus a little after 6, he gets to school about 7, classes start 7:45. I can drive to the school in ~10 to 15 minutes.
Private school. No bus service. We drive our kids back and forth to school every day (much too far to walk.)
Even if we went to public school, I would not have my kids ride the bus. Too much wasted time that can be used on something productive. In the car on the way to school we listen to audiobooks, and on the way home we talk about our day. Half the time that's the only time I really get to talk to my kids, because they are buckled in and can't run away to play, they have to talk to me.
The bus picks up and drops off half a block from our house and now that the kids are old enough to be home alone for a while, morning and afternoon unless they bike to school (it is a mile away and the last bus pickup before school and the first drop off after school, a 10-15 minutes bike ride).
With two working parents, before latchkeying was a reality, we drove to drop off and pick up.
ALSO, I would not let a 3 year old with Sensory Processing Disorder and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder ride a bus to preschool unless I absolutely had to. But since you and the father don't work, I don't see why you can't drive him.
Or is this question just a thinly veiled "why do it yourself when the government will do it for you" question about why get a job when the government will provide everything you need?
